Rory Sutherland Wins 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila

Silver City, New Mexico – Rory Sutherland (AUS) capped an outstanding week of racing in the desert southwest for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, taking the overall win at the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila. Sutherland started off the Tour of the Gila with a victory in Stage 1 and he and his Teammates never relinquished the lead. Earning multiple podiums and top 10 finishes throughout the grueling race Team UnitedHealthcare protected the leader’s jersey from beginning to end. Competitive Cyclist’s Chad Beyer and Bontrager-Livestrong’s Joe Dombrowski rounded out the top three in the General Classification, finishing second and third, respectively.

Sutherland talked about his win in New Mexico, stating, “This was not easy, it was tough. The boys did a great job getting us to this point and sometimes you have to put it on your shoulders and bring it home. When your Teammates ride so hard for you, you don’t have a choice. You have to pay them back for what they’ve done and show them how much their effort means. We are heading in the direction we want and are seeing the hard work of the past few months start to pay off.”Sutherland added, “The other teams were great, especially Competitive Cyclist and Bontrager-Livestrong. Simply a tremendous effort from everyone racing here at SRAM Tour of the Gila.”

General Manager and Team Director, Mike Tamayo, said, “The SRAM Tour of the Gila is a great stage race and its good for us to get a stage race win on US soil. It’s important for our title sponsor, UnitedHealthcare, and for all of our sponsors. Winning the overall at Gila and watching the boys race up the Gila monster reassured us that the Team has done all the right things this spring.”

Tamayo continued, “Today the Team did exactly what it needed to do. Jonny (Clarke), Davide (Frattini), Ben (Day) and Chris (Jones) rode the front of the race like superstars. Jeff and Jason were in the breakaway and once the breakaway made it over the biggest climb, those two guys were in a select group that Rory, Marc (de Maar), Competitive Cyclist’s Paco Mancebo, and all the top riders where in. Jeff and Jason rode their butts off, closing the gap from five minutes to three minutes. Then, the last 10km it was Rory solo with the top riders sitting on his wheel. He slowly chipped away at the gap and won the overall by just 15 seconds.”

Reflecting on the Tour, Tamayo concluded, “We’re proud of our effort here. Also, it was impressive to watch the Bontrager-Livestrong Development Team ride so well and impress everyone, especially going 1-2 on the final stage today. They are proving a lot and they deserve to be at the Amgen Tour of California.”

Rory Sutherland Wins Stage 1 in SRAM Tour of the Gila and Marc de Maar Takes 6th

Silver City, New Mexico – The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team’s Rory Sutherland (AUS) won the opening stage of the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila, giving the Team its third win of the season and 28th top 10 finish to date. Sutherland, who also finished 2nd in Stage 3 of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali earlier this year in Italy, won the stage in 3:45:43, 12 seconds ahead of second place finisher Joe Dombrowski (USA) of Team Bontrager-Livestrong and 14 seconds of Chad Beyer (USA) of Competitive Cyclist Racing Team. Sutherland’s Teammate, Marc de Maar (CUR), took 6th in the opening stage of the SRAM Tour of the Gila, which is now enjoying its first year as a UCI 2.2 stage race.

Following the stage win, Sutherland said, “This was a good win for us and we are very happy about the Team’s performance. As a Team, we went into today not knowing exactly where we were having just come back from Europe. This Team has battled sickness, bad weather, injuries and a lot of hard racing in Europe, so getting the win today was nice, especially after all of the ups and downs we’ve experienced. We’ve done a lot of events together throughout the past few months and as a Team we have endured a lot. I believe that has brought us closer together.”

“This is a great race sponsored by SRAM and we’re excited to be here,” Sutherland continued. “The field is strong and Mancebo’s team (Francisco Mancebo (SPA) of Competitive Cyclist Racing Team) did a good job and raced well to land three in the top 10 today.”

Sutherland concluded, “Marc de Maar and the UnitedHealthcare boys really did a great job, keeping us in a good position throughout the day. The confidence was there and the boys put us in the right place at the bottom of the climb. The legs came around for me and I felt great so I went with my own tempo up the climb, which was good enough to get the victory for Team UnitedHealthcare. It’s good to see all of the Team’s hard work coming together here in New Mexico, especially leading into the upcoming Amgen Tour of California.”

The grueling five-day stage race continues tomorrow with Stage 2, a 128.7km trek from Silver City, NM to Fort Bayard, NM.
