March 24th 2013
With a great performance Austrian-resident Yvonne van
Vlerken secured an excellent 5th place at Abu Dhabi International Triathlon in
extreme windy and hot conditions.
Exiting the water on 13th and with only a few minutes behind the leaders around
the Ironman® Hawaii World Champs runner-up Caroline Steffen/SWI, van Vlerken did
show an impressive solo-ride on her new, with ENVE´s aero-carbon wheels SES 8.9
equipped, TT-bike MR.T (by Simplon) and honoured her nickname „The Flying Dutch
On the extremely hot and windy 200 kilometers through the desert of Abu Dhabi
peppered up with three rounds on the "Yas Marinas" Formula 1 – course
Yvonne van Vlerken moved to 4th place with a bike split of 5:21:09h (37.4 km /
h average ). On the 20km run she just had give up one rank.
That saved her a targeted Top 5 result and she will move fully motivated onto
the startline of Ironman Melbourne in 3 weeks. Australian Melissa Hausschildt won in front of Caroline Steffen / SWI and
Michelle Vesterby / DEN.
The Belgian Frederik van Lierde took his second victory at the world's most
cosmopolitan and prestigious race besides Ironman® Hawaii (76 nations were at
the starting line).
Yvonne on the new partnership:
"I am very satisfied with my race, it was also a test of the new bike-material
under race conditions and I'm thrilled with the outcome. My first race is never
very good, I just need racing miles, so we planned this race three weeks before
the Ironman ® Melbourne to get my legs tuned up to race-pace. Now focus is on a
quick recovery and then I´ll jump into the direct preparations for Melbourne.
