Service Instructions - Wheels

Congratulations on the purchase of your ENVE Composites wheels!

Read these instructions and follow them for correct use. Specific tools and knowledge are necessary for proper installation. It is recommended that the wheels be installed by a qualified bicycle technician.

Models

• 700c 25mm, 45mm, 65mm tubular and clincher
• 26" XC clincher, All Mountain clincher, and tubular wheels
• 29'er XC and All Mountain clincher wheels

Service Specifications

• Road Wheel Tensions: 100-120kg (Front), 120-140kg ( Rear Drive)
• Mountain Wheel Tensions: 110-120kg (Front Disc), 120-140kg (Rear Drive)

Brake pads

• Use of incorrect brake pads can cause damage to carbon braking surface and rim. Use only the recommended ENVE Composites Grey brake pads with your ENVE Composites wheels.
• Note: Use of any other brake pad will void the warranty
• Contact your local bicycle dealer or an ENVE Composites customer service representative to obtain correct replacement pads when necessary.

Mounting tires

• Carefully follow the instructions provided by your tire manufacturer. For tubular wheels, the gluing procedure for composite rims, while similar, is different from aluminum rims. Ensure correct adhesive and procedure is used to make a reliable tire mounting.

Quick releases

• Quick Releases (QR) provide superior wheel retention if they are correctly installed and maintained.
• When closing the QR, too much leverage may cause damage to the QR, and result in accident, injury or death. The QR lever closing force is adjusted by turning the nut opposite of the QR lever clockwise to tighten, or counter-clockwise to loosen.
• Adjust the QR lever so moderate force is required to close lever fully.
• Consult a qualified bicycle mechanic for QR adjustment tips or regarding questions on proper lever force.
• ENVE Composites suggest adjusting the lever so that, when closed, it is pointing upward in order to avoid contact with passing objects.
• Regularly check the quick release adjustment. The QR may need periodic lubrication at pivot points so it can exert maximum sideways force without binding.

Cassette installation

• ENVE Composite wheels use cassette bodies that are compatible with most 9,10, and 11 speed cassettes from Campagnolo, Shimano, and SRAM.
• Lightly lubricate the freehub body exterior with oil or grease before mounting the cassette.
• Adjust and tighten the cassette lockring to manufacturer's specifications.

Maintenance and Use

It is the user’s responsibility to examine their ENVE Composites product on a regular basis to determine the need for service or replacement. Users should inspect their bicycle and parts on a regular basis in order to detect damage that may have occurred from normal use and abuse.
Check all parts for damage and wear before every use. Should any problems or concerns arise, discontinue riding the bicycle and have it inspected by a qualified bicycle technician.

Wheel truing

ENVE Composites Bicycle wheels are straight, round, and stable because of a balanced spoke tensions. The rim’s shape can be changed by tightening and loosening spoke nipples. Wheel truing should be performed by persons with adequate wheel truing experience or training. If you do not have confidence or experience with wheel truing, take the wheels to a qualified technician for this service.

• Problems that require the attention of a specialist: This includes major untrueness, chronic spoke loosening or breakage, noises, rim chips and cracks, or any negative sensations while riding. These are important signs to visit your local bike shop for expert advice. Do not ride a wheel that is unreliable or subject to questionable performance as evaluated by a user.

Hub maintenance

ENVE Composites wheels are built with hubs that are equipped with high grade, precision, sealed cartridge bearings. Under normal circumstances, no maintenance is required.

Please be aware of the following situations:

• Avoid contamination of bearings with solvents, aerosol lubricants (as for chain), and strong cleaning solutions inn the hubs. Solvents can pass the seals and break down the bearing grease, decreasing performance and lifespan.
• When cleaning the bike, use only mild soap and a mild stream of water for rinsing. Avoid pressure washing. High pressure systems can direct water and special wetting agents at a high pressure, forcing water passed the bearing seal and removing critical bearing grease.

Wheel Replacement Parts

Replacement parts are available for purchase through most bicycle service and retail locations. If the bicycle shop does not stock the necessary parts, it can be ordered by the retail location from ENVE Composites direct.

Valve Extender Installation

Rim maintenance

Carbon fiber matrix rims are complex composite structures. Please use them thoughtfully and inspect the wheels regularly.

• When braking, particularly on descents, utilize both front and rear brakes. They have different benefits and limitations, so use them accordingly. Incorporate advice from experienced riders. It is important that both rims are employed during descents to properly dissipate heat.
• When riding in damp, wet or dirty conditions, listen for scraping sounds that might indicate soil or grit is trapped in the brake pad. Contaminated brake pads will be less effective in stopping and be more abrasive and damaging against the rim. Stop, remove the wheel and inspect the pad surface. Remove any debris and clean before it can damage the rim brake surface.
• Water on the rim and brake pads will increase braking distance. In the wet, allow extra distance and time for stopping.
• Vigorous braking will cause brake pads to heat and possibly mark the rim brake track. Do not allow melted pad material to accumulate on the rim surface. Pad deposits should be removed with care using a scotch brite pad and gentle cleaning action. Be careful to keep solvents from reaching the tire or the rim cement that secures it. Pad material on the rim brake track can interfere with brake response, cause vibration, and create hot spots that could damage the rim.
• If, during one of your frequent inspections, you notice impact damage or any other deformation of the rim, immediately seek advice from an experienced mechanic. If you cannot locate such expertise, contact ENVE Composites with any questions or concerns.

WARNING: In the event of a bicycle accident, discontinue riding the bicycle until it has been thoroughly examined by a qualified bicycle mechanic, and any damaged parts replaced.
All damaged parts should be repaired or replaced by a qualified bicycle mechanic before the bicycle is used again. Continuing to use damaged parts may lead to loss of control of the bicycle and cause injury or death.
